About Special Olympics Virginia

Special Olympics Virginia is a social movement built on inclusion, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability. We are helping to make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place -- one athlete, one volunteer, one family member at a time. For more information on how to get involved with Special Olympics Virginia, visit www.specialolympicsva.org or call 800-932-4653.

Mission: Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Our mission remains as vital today as it did when the movement was founded in 1968. We want to create a world that is more humane and friendly; a place that accepts and celebrates differences among people; a bigger, better community based on the understanding that we are people first, and each one a reflection of human dignity.

This year, thousands of children and adults will be touched by the transformative power of the work we do in sports, health, education, and community building. Join us and reveal your inner champion!
